Helicopter carrying politician gatecrashes IIT Roorkee’s sports tournament

A helicopter belonging to Congress leader Raj Babbar landed in the middle of a Roorkee stadium while a tournament was going on, sending students and teachers alike running for cover. While nobody was injured, this is the third such unexpected landing in the past few years.

The incident occurred due to incorrectly supplied coordinates. In a stunning failure of aviation security, these coordinates were not cross-checked, either visually or otherwise before the pilot landed.

IIT Roorkee has lodged a complaint with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), citing two prior events (in April and December 2013) of similar hazards being engendered due to lax aviation rules.
